Malofie - the term originally used as a more formal reference to the bearer of the male tatau or sogaimiti - has over time become more commonly used to describe the group of tatau bearers whereby including the female tatau or malu.

However, the Malofie Registry has been designed to not only capture the bearers of the tatau but also those who are part of their family, village, or community.

"Tama! E le o se tatau a oe. O le tatau o le nu'u, ma tagata a nu'u o lo'o e tautua ai nei."

Translation: "Son! Your tatau is not yours. The tatau belongs to the village, and the community within which you serve."
